Pinterest adds 21M monthly users as AI discovery meets revenue gap
Pinterest gained 21M monthly users in Q3. Regional revenue and ARPU show why AI shopping must turn discovery into advertiser value.
Pinterest gained 21 million monthly active users from one quarter to the next, reaching 661 million globally by the end of September 2026. For marketers, the headline is not just that more people are using the platform. It is that Pinterest must turn a geographically changing audience into commercially valuable discovery.
The company's October 29 earnings release reported US$1.174 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 12% year over year, even as its monthly active audience grew 10% from the previous year. Chief executive Bill Ready pointed to AI-driven visual search and shopping, saying these experiences are making Pinterest "increasingly valuable for users and advertisers alike."
661 million monthly active users Pinterest's Q3 total was 21 million higher than the 640 million reported for Q2, according to Pinterest's quarterly results.

Why the 21M user gain matters less than where it happened
Audience growth is useful, but it is not the same as a new customer-acquisition channel becoming profitable. The 21 million figure is the net increase in measured monthly active users between quarter-ends, not a count of first-time signups. That distinction matters when brands try to convert platform momentum into planning assumptions.
Pinterest's regional data suggest that the next stage of growth is increasingly international. By September, the company recorded 394 million monthly active users in its Rest of World reporting region, compared with 107 million in the US and Canada and 161 million in Europe.
Pinterest is therefore gaining reach in markets whose economics differ sharply from its historically strongest advertising market. A larger audience can increase the potential number of discovery moments, but it does not automatically create a matching increase in monetizable impressions, advertiser demand or transaction value.
The deeper shift is from measuring discovery platforms by the size of their audiences to asking where and how those audiences create commercial intent.

Pinterest's international audience is not yet its revenue engine
The quarter's revenue geography makes that tension visible. US and Canada produced US$894 million of Pinterest's US$1.174 billion revenue, while Rest of World generated US$87 million. Yet Rest of World contained more than three times the US and Canada monthly active user base.
US$8.38 versus US$0.23 in quarterly ARPU Pinterest reported these average revenue per user figures for US and Canada and Rest of World, respectively, in Q3 2026.
The full picture is more useful than treating all international growth as interchangeable:
| Region | Q3 monthly active users | Q3 revenue | Q3 ARPU |
|---|---|---|---|
| US and Canada | 107 million | US$894 million | US$8.38 |
| Europe | 161 million | US$193 million | US$1.21 |
| Rest of World | 394 million | US$87 million | US$0.23 |
These are Pinterest-reported platform-wide figures. Regional ARPU is not a forecast for an individual campaign's costs or returns, and the three regions have different advertiser and user mixes. Still, the gap shows why scaling an audience and scaling advertising yield are separate challenges.
A common assumption is that faster user growth should translate directly into faster advertising revenue growth. Pinterest's numbers complicate that idea. Marketers should evaluate reach, local purchasing behavior, available ad formats and measurable business outcomes separately, rather than using global audience size as a shortcut for media value.
AI ad tools are built to connect inspiration with outcomes
Pinterest's answer increasingly involves AI-powered discovery and advertising products. The company has been developing ways to recognize visual preferences and connect them with relevant products, rather than depending only on keywords or a conventional entertainment feed.
In its June product update, Pinterest described a Business Assistant for advertisers, a Model Context Protocol integration for partner AI workflows, and a new Performance+ creative model that selects among variations for individual ad impressions. The company reported a 7.5% increase in click volume in testing of the new selection model versus its previous approach. That was a specific company test, not evidence that every advertiser will see the same gain.

The difference between these tools is important. AI can make discovery more personalized for shoppers, while campaign optimization and workflow integrations can make Pinterest easier for advertisers to operate. Neither development, on its own, proves incremental sales.
Pinterest also introduced Programmatic Deals in October, opening selected display and video inventory through established demand-side platforms. That is a different move from generating more consumer demand: it reduces some of the operational friction involved in buying the media.

The comparison with broader search and social advertising is revealing. Google is commonly used for explicit search intent, while Meta offers large-scale feed-based advertising. Pinterest is positioning visual inspiration as another high-intent environment. Its challenge is to show that a saved idea, a product comparison or an outbound click can be connected to outcomes advertisers value.
AI may improve relevance, but the business case ultimately depends on measurement.
What marketers should know about Pinterest's Q3
Pinterest's earnings give media teams a reason to look more carefully at where discovery occurs and how it is bought, without mistaking company-level momentum for a campaign guarantee.
Separate reach from yield. Use Pinterest's audience expansion as a reach signal, but review campaign performance and local availability market by market. The regional revenue divide means one global user count tells only part of the story.
Test discovery-led creative. For visually led categories such as beauty, fashion and home, experiment with assets that help people compare and plan. Pinterest's creative-selection model is relevant, but its reported test improvement is not a substitute for your own results.
Measure what happens after discovery. Saves, clicks and searches can indicate interest. Their commercial value depends on whether advertisers can link those interactions to incremental traffic, qualified demand or sales.
Watch the buying infrastructure. Programmatic Deals and Pinterest MCP make the platform relevant to teams seeking simpler access and reporting. Confirm eligible regions, inventory and measurement support before treating new access routes as scalable media supply.
The most consequential advertising platforms will not necessarily be those with the largest or fastest-growing audiences. They may be the ones that can explain what a moment of intent is worth.
Pinterest's Q3 figures put that test in focus. AI can help connect inspiration to a product and connect a campaign to a potential customer, but the next competitive advantage will come from making those connections credible, measurable and useful across very different markets.
